This won't sit well with everyone, but here goes: Most new writers are like Chandler Bing in the early episodes of Friends:
Well, maybe we're not exactly like Chandler, but there are many similarities: When you start to write online, you're a little confused because there's so much to learn and do. There are so many platforms, strategies, and so much advice from numerous experts that you don't know where to start and what to do. And when you try to pay attention to all the noise and follow the experts, you might forget what you wanted to write about in the first place. You end up sounding weird - not like yourself. You desperately chase more views because nobody seems to pay attention to your work. The truth is there are a lot of moving parts in writing. The success (or failure) of your writing always depends on various things:
When you're trying to grow your audience, your titles play a significant role because that's how people decide if your piece is worth checking out. If your titles suck, your work will be ignored - even if your story is fantastic, unique, and amazing. We judge books by covers and online writing by titles. That's just how it is. The good news is I found a brilliant guide that'll help you write better headlines. I recently wrapped up a live cohort of my signature program, Medium Writing Academy, where I help new writers grow their audience and income by writing on Medium. I hosted dozens of coaching calls, and one of the topics we discussed most frequently was (*drum roll*): TITLES! Even though I teach best practices and specific strategies on how to write titles inside Medium Writing Academy, learning how to write great headlines takes time because, as Robert Roy Britt writes in his fabulous guide: There is no one right way to craft a headline. I feel like Robert's article is a summary of what I've been sharing in various coaching sessions lately. If you genuinely care about your message and want to reach more readers through your work, set aside 8 minutes to check it out today - you won't regret it. 😉 Headlines should be clear and engaging, and usually they should be short. Clever is good, so long as clarity is not compromised. Big love from my screen to yours, PS.
