Hey Reader, I write hundreds of newsletters per year, but this one is particularly close to my heart. The start of a new year is a special time for most people, but for me, it's also a reminder of how I took the leap to build my writing business. Five years ago, I decided to go all-in on my writing. I set a simple New Year's Resolution to write every day. And I actually did it. Three months later, my work was read by close to a million people, and I was hitting 5 figures in earnings per month. Within half a year, I helped dozens of other writers replicate my strategies and grow their own audiences. Over the next years, my goal of writing daily has turned into a thriving business that I run with two wonderful co-founders at Write • Build • Scale. We built, changed, and learned a lot in 2024 (I wrote about it here), but the biggest shift was to launch our Substack publication, which has led to incredible growth opportunities in less than 6 months. Thanks to everything we learned this year, we have a clear New Year's Goal for 2025: Helping as many writers as possible build Bestselling Substack publications. But it's not for the reasons you might think. When we talk about success on Substack, most writers think of earnings: They focus on how much $$$ they can make through paid subscriptions. And while getting paid is certainly an attractive feature, building a Bestselling publication is attractive for many other reasons as well. Running a Bestselling Substack publication means:
And that's still only the starting point. Being a Substack Bestseller also means that you get access to exclusive features on the platform, a private Bestseller chat, and so much more. We've been working with writers, experts, coaches, and entrepreneurs who want to grow their audiences for over four years now, and the challenges they face are always the same: You want to create content you actually care about. You want to use external platforms like Substack, Medium, Linkedin, or Twitter, but you want to stay true to your own voice. You understand that you need an email list, but you don't know how to set it up or manage it in the long run. One of my key mantras in business is that there's more than just one right way to succeed. If anyone ever preaches that their way of doing something is the only right option, run, my friend. Because the truth is that entrepreneurship and content creation are flexible. There's not just one way to win - there are many. What matters is that you find your unique path that delivers the results you want. And that's what we find so exciting about Substack as a platform - there's a variety of tools and features that you can use: Notes, Chat, Live Streaming, Paid Subscriptions, Video, Podcasting,.. But the key is that you don't have to use all of them to leverage the platform. Substack is a marketing powerhouse, but YOU are the director. You choose how you get the most out of the platform.
